Planned Giving is a term for used for a commitment to specific donations to a charitable organization over a desired period of time. Many charitable organizations promote ‘planned giving’ as a means of obtaining committed and sustained support for their activities. Planned giving may take the form of deferred donations or donations on a current on-going basis.
Deferred Donations may be in the form of bequests which are donations of assets such as cash, investments, or property as part of the terms of a Will. An alternative form of deferred donation could involve designation of the charity as a beneficiary of an insurance policy, a trust, or a savings plan.
Current planned giving donations could involve a commitment to ‘regular-giving’ arrangements such as monthly electronic fund transfers. Another type or arrangement could be to allocate to the charity distributions that arise from time to time from investments, endowment policies, and annuities.
